Diamond-Level Green Building: Taipei 101

With a height of 508 meters and 101 floors plus five floors below ground, Taipei 101 is a Taipei landmark and Taiwan's popular tourist attraction. With great efforts in energy saving and carbon reduction, it was awarded the US LEED Green Building Platinum certification, the highest form of honor, plus the EEWH-certified Diamond-level Green Building emblem in the architecture category. Between 2007 and 2011, Taipei 101 underwent engineering works for illumination circuit on/off control, air conditioning systems, and LED replacement for lighting devices. Daily operation management measures were in place aligned to government policies by raising the indoor temperature to 26℃. Based on the carbon-reduction effectiveness assessment, it passed two carbon-reduction criteria in terms of air conditioning and illumination technologies. With improvement, the total carbon-reduction effectiveness has increased by 40%. It thus obtains the aforementioned Diamond-level emblem following the classification in the assessment manual for old building modification. With energy-saving improvement such as equipment replacement and operation management, the total expenditure saved is about NT$7.35 million, reducing electricity use by 890 khw, saving electricity cost by approximately NT$22 million, cutting CO2 emission by 4,770 tonnes. Taipei 101 has indeed achieved a win-win objective.

Taipei Public Library Beitou Branch

Located in nature, Taipei Public Library Beitou Branch (or Beitou Park) is Taiwan's first green library. Its entire building is made with wood in a beautiful surrounding with a little creek passing through, and reading is made very pleasant and enjoyable. The architectural design is environment-friendly, pro-health/renewal and overcomes its issues regarding illumination from natural sunlight and high temperatures due to over exposure to the sun (on the west side of the building), thus creating a beautiful and practical library. In 2012, I was evaluated on Flavorwire.com as one of "the world's 25 most beautiful public libraries".

The first park in Beitou and the 14th in Taiwan, Beitou Park opened on June 17, 1913. What first meets the eye when visiting the park is the entrance water fountain completed in 2009. Inside the park are gardens, fountains, little bridges and so on. Walk along the Beitou River and you will reach the birth place of "Beitou Stone", the world's only stone named after Taiwan. Though such stones can no longer be seen here.

Even when there are no performances running indoors, the location of WeiWuYing means the noise from nearby highway traffic can be minimized. The building designed like undulating waves in a vast park will attract crowds. WeiWuYing has changed the imagery of the city landscape.
